Opening it up, it was dry as a bone and FULL of corrosion!
How is rice supposed to fix this? Short answer: it can't.
The longer a device exposed to water waits for a proper cleaning, the lower the odds of restoring it. There is no technology or gimmick available that can substitute for dis-assembly and ultrasonic cleaning. Recently, some clever inventors came up with a machine that "dries" a wet device through a combination of heat and a vacuum. Even this machine cannot save all wet devices, and in many cases, it makes it worse by drying it out. Corrosion, dirt, and other contaminants are much easier to remove while the device is wet. Once fully dried, the odds of a full recovery are diminished. This iPad was as dry as it could be, but look at it! The sensitive components are covered in corrosion.
This is the iPad's logic board being cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner. Watch that corrosion in the center seem like it's just melting away. :)
