Since that event's "name" is trademarked by the NFL, I can't mention the words "super" or "bowl" at the same time in reference to a sporting even held this time of year, every year, so I won't. The decision at hand is, watch TV or solder S3 ports? Hmmm...

*EDIT* An astute reader informed me that while I mentioned soldering S3's, I had a photo of something that is NOT and S3. Indeed, the photo shows a Galaxy Tablet logic board. Even some of Samsung's tablets have the same poor USB port design - that is, soldered to the logic board.

Save the silica gel for your jerky

A little chat I recently had on Facebook with some friends in the phone repair business. Tamara asked where the soy sauce was (for the rice that's part of dinner). Soy sauce is high in sodium, and salt is a true desiccant. Thus, the joke about “soy working better than rice”. Please do not dunk your wet phone in soy sauce.

Someone else suggested saving silica gel packets (the tiny packets that read, "Do not eat" that you find in your new shoes, coat pockets, beef jerky bags, and other places where attempts at reducing moisture are made).

Silica gel is a proven desiccant. It can absorb up to 40% of its weight in moisture. That may bode well for wet things, but unless you have new silica gel packets from an air-tight package, odds are they've reached the end of their useful life. In addition, the dirt and gunk the water washed into your phone will still be there - starting the corrosion process.

Save the desiccants for your jerky and get your phone to a repair shop with an ultrasonic cleaner.
